I’ve been an Elementary Teacher for over 10 years now. Teachers work hard! It’s a rewarding career; however, it can lead to “burnout” especially, if you don’t practice self care. You may be wondering–how can you practice self-care? You feel your time is scarce enough as it is. It’s essential to yourself to take care of YOU to be the Best Educator for your students. Here’s 10 Ways Teachers Can Practice Self Care this School Year (that can be easily incorporated into your day)!
1. Stay out the school’s Vending Machine.
Instead of reaching for high sugary treats in the teacher’s lounge or the school’s vending machine. Try whole fruits, nuts and fruit snacks that will give you energy.
2. Drink Less Coffee.
Before that morning cup of coffee, make sure to fill up on water in the morning and throughout the day to stay hydrated and fueled.
3. Take a After-School Nap.
A 20 minute nap after school is idea to rejuvenate your energy to continue working at home.
4. Treat Yo’Self.
Your budget may be tight–It’s okay to treat yo’self sometimes. Buy yourself a giftcard to your favorite cafe, coffee shop or spa for those days you need a little extra love.
5. Don’t be afraid to say “No”.
Yes, they will ask! You don’t have to volunteer and stay for every school function. Don’t be afraid to say “No, thank you”–and ask for help when you need to.
6. Move Your Body.
A daily workout routine will help release all the stress that can build up in the body from the daily demands of teaching. If the weekdays are too busy, try working out on the weekends.
7. Set Work Life Balance.
Teachers to-do list seems to never end. However, it is really important to set a healthy work life balance to prevent “teacher burnout’. Decide on what teaching responsibilities you are willing to take home and how much time you’re able to give to “working at home”.
8. No Gossiping or Complaining.
The teacher’s lounge can be full with many “complaints”. Yes, there are many demands that come with teaching that cause one the need to express concern(s). However, Gossiping and complaining will only drain your positive energy. Instead voice your concerns respectfully to the proper school authority.
9. Prayer, affirmation and meditation.
I find this to be very helpful; especially on those Monday Mornings! Creating a Daily Morning Prayer, Affirmation and meditation Routine is essential for maintaining peace, balance and serenity.
10. Sharpen Your Teaching Skills.
Instead of waiting for “mandatory” professional development. Seek training that most interest you, will benefit your students; and make your school day flow easier.
Sometimes when you’re having a “bad” day, all you need is to do is talk it out with a Good Friend while enjoying Good Food! Grab your BFF and head to your favorite Coffee Shop for some good ‘ole fashion love and healing! Share this with your Bestie!

Children are so Precious! Rather you have your own children or a special child in your life. Value and appreciate their innocence and purity that they bring to the world–and to your life. Never be to “busy” for them. Always make time to show them they are loved!
